Early Childhood and COVID-19

Given the stress and uncertainty of the times combined with a drastic change in daily routine, it is likely some children may begin to exhibit or have an increase in challenging behaviors. These behaviors can easily impact overall family functioning. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a treatment for families with young children exhibiting a wide range of behavioral difficulties.

Internet-Based PCIT (I-PCIT) is a research-based form of PCIT maintaining the use of live observation and coaching caregivers and their children, BCSC specializes in delivering PCIT and has been utilizing I-PCIT well before the COVID-19 outbreak. As a result, our clinicians are very familiar with the model. Similar to traditional PCIT, I-PCIT has clinical application to children a wide range of behavioral difficulties including oppositional behavior, anxiety, and behaviors consistent with autism spectrum disorders.

Using video teleconferencing technology (or “telehealth“), I-PCIT allows families to receive real-time observation and coaching in their home environment. By using technological innovations, treatment is delivered in the very context in which a child’s problem behaviors occur.

I-PCIT is offered in various combinations ranging from full implementation to select sessions in the home environment. Level of implementation will be determined following an initial consultation.

Currently, I-PCIT is offered to families residing in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Families residing in other states may be eligible to receive time-limited I-PCIT.
