Strengths and weaknesses in learning profiles are common amongst all children and adolescents. Frequently, individuals fall behind in a given area leading parents and schools to become concerned about the presence of learning challenges. Even individuals with superior intellectual capabilities can suffer from learning disabilities.
Academic and learning-based neuropsychological assessments focus on understanding both if a weakness exists and, more importantly, why that weakness is there.
Weaknesses in a given academic area can result from many factors including learning disabilities, executive function weaknesses, mental health struggles, poor match between learning style and academic environment, and cognitive processing style.
BCSC’s academic and learning assessments use referral questions and initial intake information to tailor a comprehensive testing battery appropriate to understand a client and their individual learning profile. The goal of the assessment is NOT just to identify a learning disability but to understand how the interaction between a child’s cognitive abilities and approaches to tasks result in their current presentation.
